The copyright office can offer you a registration process, but it will cost a few bucks, and give you no additional legal protection. Go here and you'll find everything you need to know:
http://www.copyright.gov/ Photoguy is correct; as soon as you capture a photographic image, you instantly have the copyright. Enforcing it is another question entirely, however!
It wasn't always this way; let me research when the concept of taker-gets-the-copyright originated; I am fairly sure it wasn't there until post-World-War-2!

Yes, famous war photographer Robert Capa (and others) founded the MAGNUM Photo Agency in 1947. If I am not mistaken, that agency, more than any other, instilled the current universal acceptance of the key concept of possessing the automatic and instant copyrights to your own photographic image work...
