Although performance and installation art are increasingly becoming mainstream, artists have consistently pushed the boundaries of what most people might think is "conventional". Andy Goldsworthy, Christo, Yoko Ono, okay, these are "unconventional" artists who do these kinds of things. Picasso in his day, Van Gogh, are more obvious examples. In the more critical professional world of photography many people find Diane Arbus, and Annie Leibowitz to be "unconventional" in one form or another. Ansel Adams in his day was "unconventional" in that he used a bellows camera in the 1960's, and processed black and white fine art landscapes during the advent of color photography. Andy Warhol is a prime example of this, Jackson Pollack, an unconventional painter of all things. There are artists who were not recognized in their day who are completely considered common place or today are considered the pinnacle of the fine art world. Peace.
