I'm an amateur photographer who just started photography. I am in dire need of selecting a field or endeavor that will provide for a good income. Right now, I am out of work with alot of time on my hands. I know this is the Arts catergory, but this question centers around income oppurtunities.
- I am willing to put in the time (weeks/months) required to learn Premier video editing or Photoshop image editing.
- I am open to photographing or taking videos of just about anything under the sun, from A to Z, just as long as I can earn a good income from it.
- I am open to moving out of the U.S and living in a different country. In fact, that's something that I aspire to do no matter what I wind up doing.
In order to qualify for the warranty, I'd have to buy Photoshop new. It costs $649.
Ditto for Premier video editing. And it costs $900!
Please help me decide. Of the two, which field might pay more? Photography or video?
-Thank you- Thats a challenging one now. Lets start by thinking if I were you, how would I try to move into earning field by these options in hand. (Having time is a great option by the way which I really want to have)
Photograph Editing:
Many of the photographers have their own skills and I think they enjoy or want to make editing on their works by their own. If i see this issue I will try not to learn it with hope to edit pictures of other photographers. BUT ... of course I will learn it to make the pictures I took. BUT again.. thre is one way you can do,
1. You can guide/teach new photographers how to fix their work.
2. You can be a good helping hand to wedding photographers, specially on runing seasons
3. You can offer your services to those stock picture taker who take good pictures but with not very good quality or colors. You can find them online at many places
4. Since you are photographer, you can do the same, working out your pictures and put them to sale or share. (Find my answer about making photography your career)
Video Editing
Video Editing setup required expensive setup, not only the software but the equipments, without them I am not sure you can have a good runing hand on situation. Lets suppose you have the equipments, then Premier by Adobe is a wonderful product, along with Adobe After Effects which you must need to get your hands on in order to refine your product into competing race.
And not to forget the photoshop and the photo editing skills are required in it as well. Color correction is a must-to-know key in video editing.
If you qualify the above steps then yes money will roll in. Market is really wide open, welcoming the fresh creative blood always.

Step by Step movement on to your task.
1. Get your hands on to photoediting in Photoshop.
2. Build your profile high by keep working here and there. Free or for small amount for new commers.
3. Take photographs, make their wallpapers, practice on color correction and different styles.
4. Offer your services to and/or join various online stock galleries
5. Once you feel satisfaction from your photo editing works start shifting toward video editing. Remember two name, Adobe Premier and Adobe Aftereffects

you can do both, i do computer animation in-addition to photography, and i am doing so well. Video editing would be more lucrative because the print media is slowly transforming to more of an Internet-based media. They are starting to include video on web sites and you will find more jobs in video editing. Both because with today's technology, you can shoot "still" photos and insert them into a video clip. So don't sell yourself short. Also, you can sell your photos to various media productions. Depending on the type of "still" photos you shoot, various media prodution companies would be interested and you can also, use your still photos to create an art production. DO BOTH, YOU NEVER KNOW UNTIL YOU TRY, RIGHT!!!!!! To save yourself money, you can shop around for computers such as Dell, Compaq, Mac to see if one of them can design a computer with the software you require to do photos and video. The software can be part of the purchase price for the computer, software and all associated components to do what you would like to do with your career. |
