What to study? |
I'm having a hard time decising what to study in college. I do not want to take useless classes in areas that I will never be interested in. I like the following: Photography, Drug and Alcohol Studies, Business Management, Art, Sociology and Psychology. The problem is that I'm not sure I want to take any of the General Ed. classes, but I know that there is a significant difference is pay between someone with a certificate and someone with an AA/BA or BS. Can anyone throw some suggestions my way!?!?!? OR if anyone can give me some "from personal experience" advice, that would also be greatly appreciated! =) With a degree in social work (BSW, MSW, DSW) you can incorporate business management, art, sociology, psychology and drug and alcohol studies. Business mangement is important in the field of social work for the management of nonprofit organizations and private practice. Art can be incorporated into social work by means of art therapy and play therapy. Many classes en route to a degree in social work will be in the psych/soc deparments. It is a really interesting degree to get. You learn a lot about yourself and people. There are a variety of settings that you can work in (schools, mental health, hospitals, drug and alcohol centers, jails, management, nonprofits, businesses and research just to name a few). The pay greatly varies depending upon your degree and your area of specialization (or what setting you choose to work in). A lot of nonprofits will pay for you to get a masters degree in social work if it benefits their company. I promise that you will never be a zillionaire, but you will have a really worthwhile job that makes you feel good about yourself. There are a ton of internships if you think it might sound interesting you can try it out. My other suggestion is to take your core classes, get them out of the way and take that time to learn about yourself and your interests. HTH take what you enjoy. then only will you excel. (gimme points!) Most colleges have 48 required credits of basic studies that you must take before you can start on your program or major. If you take 12 credits, the minimum needed to be a full time student, that gives you two years before you decide what your major will be. Most people do not know what they want to do with the rest of their lives when entering college. You can visit career services center which can give you a variety of tests that will point you in the right direction for a career choice. Volunteer and work at various places to see what you enjoy. majors in english can go on to do nearly anything in general. Occupations for majors in english include: |
