I want to be a sucessful Photographer and do something along I'm a junior in high school, what are the steps

Hey,Well.I would a career that I may pursue that includes a good salary and yet I'd enjoy it.
Photography along with the Arts,is something I love.I also love psychology.I'm currently taking two electives in my Junior year.Photography I and Psychology I.
What should i do,the steps to be successful. My parents are having money crises and i saw the tuitions and fees online for several schools like The Arts Institutes and it's expensive.I'm not sure what i should be currently doing,so far I'm thinking and trying hard to gain good grades. Please give me a good advice towards a good future and a safe good present tense.

What should I do photography and something else?Something like photography and something along related to arts perhaps?

Photography can be expensive to get started in.

Is there a line of education, that you can get scholarships and grants for? Use those to get into school. Major in one thing, minor in photographic arts. Take some regular art courses. They will teach you perspective, etc... Take some business courses, because phootgraphy is a business, and you need to know about contracts, local legal necessities, taxes, insurance, and more.

You dont need an art school to get started. Most of the best photogs didnt start out at an Art Institute. Some of the best photo courses I have seen and heard of, are at community colleges. A lot of them are taught by real working photographers, not just someone that can read a course manual, and attach a lens to body. Get to know your instructors. They will know other photogs in the area looking for assistants, or opportunitys for you to get more experience in other ways.

When your old enough to participate in contracts, get a portfolio started with something like www.modelmayhem.com, as a photog. Offer to do model portfolio developement. You can work on your craft, network with models, photogs, stylists, etc..., and get your name out there.

To get started, you dont need high end equipment. I would be careful buying anything used, but its up to you, and your budget. Get what you can, as you can. Start with a decent base camera, 55mm lens, a decent flash that can be used "off camera", as well as on. You can purchase used items as you can, for a mini-studio setup, and for outdoor sets. When you get an idea of whats needed, you can make things like reflectors, shades, stands, backgrounds, props, etc...

Take lots of photos. Evaluate them. What would make them better technically?? How would you change your settings, to give you what you want? Evaluate the esthetic side of the photos. How would changing a setting, or moving around something, shooting a different angle, using a secondary subject like a railing, background, a person, the sky, etc..., make this more interesting photo.

Do the same as your out walking around. If I had my camera, how would I take this photo?? Your setup will eventually become second nature.

Hope this helps.

Enter in as many photo contests as you can, especially school art shows. The people who judge them are experienced and you never know who will see your work. Maybe an agent, perhaps? It's a lucky break. Also, there are photo scholarships available. Apply for those too. Good luck.

if you really want to pursue a photographyor arts career. i would HIGHLY suggest a college of arts. You said its expensive that is true all you have to do is make sure your grades are really good and apply for scholarships and grants. those can get you free money and then if need apply for student loans that you dont have to pay off untill you are finished with college. To get information about this kind of stuff talk to your schools career counsler if you have one and he\she will give you lots of good info.

these websites should help you figure out that kind of info

i think you should go into a career that you are really going to like and not waste time and money on something thats only a fase. hope you make a good choice.

You do not need to go to formal school to become a photographer but you have to learn it from somewhere be it from a class room environment or from you reading and doing things on your own.

1. You should learn the technical aspects of photography and your camera (composition, shutter speed, rules of thirds, depth of field etc), once you understand these you will be able to create better images.

2. Shoot in "M" (manual mode) because you will have more control over your camera and not the other way around. When you are in one of the "Auto" modes the camera will just read the highlights and shadow areas and try to get you a picture. The camera is not smart enough to know what you are shooting.

3. You can start reading all kinds of books on this subject and get information from the internet. This includes web based classes, manufactures web sites to personal blogs.

4. Buy the best DSLR camera that you can afford this also includes good lenses. Take out your camera and manual sit down and go over all the buttons and knobs etc.. this is the best way for you to learn what your camera can do.

5. Start shooting with your camera to get practice and from what you are learning from reading and doing you will get better. Practice does make perfect. Take notes while shooting and then look at your photos on the computer find the best one from that set and see what you did to get the shot and see what you did to get the shot and why you like it more than the others.

6. You can get yourself a job as a photographers assistant (be it payed or free) and learn from that person.

7. My suggestion is to find a part of photography that you would have an interest in and point in that direction and specialize. You will try to produce a better image of that subject opposed to just "having" to shoot it.

8. Areas of photography include portraits, wedding, product,
nature, travel, fine art and journalism. Some of these career
fields require a studio with special lighting others do not but
require different lenses and other equipment and techniques.

Since you have access to the internet here is a start: Some you have to pay for and some are free.. start with the free stuff of course.
