Why do I need to declare a major?

I don't have any idea what I want to do with my life.

All I have so far is that I want to be remembered for something.

Travel, Literature, Photography, Languages, Anthropology, Art, History, Math: I am interested in pretty much everything.

So why do I have to decide? WHy can't I just major in something like "Being well-rounded" and take the classes I want to take? Why do they care so much that they deprive me of the choice that I want to make?

lol thats why they have liberal studies! thats my major...i hate declaring a major. but they want you to. you can get a BA in liberal studied and then go back for a masters degre in something specific. good luck and dont let people tell you what you should and should not do with your life! fight the system with me..

Tell them all to go and die and then you can get a nice constructive drug habit.

Most people who enroll in college have a goal in mind. It also protects the government grant programs and student loan programs from people becoming "professional students"

Sounds like your major needs to be General Studies. This allows for the maximum maneuverability between classes. You should check into it at your school.

The reason for declaring a major is so that you have an academic "road map" to get to graduation. It basically outlines all the course which you must take to graduate.

if you do not know what you want to do with your life, then you should not be in college yet. The point of declaring a major is to give yourself a goal to work for, and to try to accomplish it w/in 3-5 years.

Dont be like some people (me for example) who goto school for 10 years, change majors 5 or 6 times and still not have a degree to show for it. Never could settle on geology or geography, so I did neither :D

("to note, I'm one of those people that believe if' I'm going to spend money to get the degree, it needs to be a degree that gets me a job") Not a lot of degrees get you the job the degree was meant for. Doctor, yah Lawyer, yah, Scientist yah. BUT..how many people are "english" majors and then end up doing something totally unrelated etc... So yah..unless you really know what you want to do w/ life, you're better off staying ahead of the rat race, and enjoying life for a couple of years while you learn a little more about yourself. Then revisit the issue and see if you are ready to move ahead.. After all as humans we are not meant to be chained to desks all day long. So make sure whatever you DO pick, it's something you love doing...
