There's a really good Finnish painter who handles light really well. Any ideas on his name?

This artist may or may not still be alive; I don't know. He was quite popular in Finland a while back. He handles light -- both its presence and its absence -- incredibly well. He may have been painting before photography was considered art. His paintings look almost like photos. Any info would be helpful. Thanks!

One of these maybe?
