hi yahoo'ers! you always give good advice so as always, thanks in advance! right,i have a friends who unbelievably talented at photography. that is to say she takes the most amazing photographs.she has travelled alot and takes photos wherever she goes. im no art critic but even i was blown away at the way she see's things. we live in london and was wondering what to do with these pictures? i mean there must be a way to make money from them as they are so good. i think she could make a career from them. any ideas? who you approach or what the procceedure is? i hate to see talent go to waste and she needs the money, must be something you can do with em? any help or advice would be really good. thanks.

There are publishers who handle books of photography...I'm sure you can Google that subject. Also, magazines are always hiring photographers with a good eye, and they'll want to see a portfolio. The sad truth is, though, that photography is one of those industries where you might be really good and not make a penny...then again, you might just take wedding pictures and make a fortune because you're good with advertising...fine art doesn't often equal a paycheck.

put them up in galleries, art cafes, restaurants, bars with price tags on and someone will probs buy them.

theres lots of talented photographers, handymen, labourers

then theres professionals who study light, exposure and other things for years, they struggle and fall away and some make it.

so if her work is of Professional standard submit 3 images to istockphoto.com and see if they accept them if they do go for it

otherwise well theres always what the pros do study light, exposure and other things for years

see how they compare

if you trust the judgement here post a link to a shot and ask for feedback, you like em would you part with cash for them?

as you say your not qualified, go look at getty images dot com to see what its about

hope that helps, if shes really got talent/technical abillity blah blah, tell her to do a art, photography and marketing degree

just being realistic - she might be Anne Geddes who knows

If your friend wants to make a living based on her photography then she needs to put together a portfolio. A good portfolio does not mean that she include every single work she has done nor does it mean simply to gather the best images. Whether she is applying to a gallery or presenting herself to a publisher or an ad agency she needs to present a minimum of 10 images from a particular body of work. Of course not being a professional she make not work in series, or have a particular style or vision. In this case you basically lay all of her images out on a table and start making sense of them by categorizing them to find a particular vision or style. After you sort the images then you need to create the actual portfolio. In terms of presntation, there are so many approaches to creating a portfolio, but the key is to be unique in how you present your images. A simple way to present the images would be to create a small paperback on-demand book. In terms of where to send the portfolio, I would suggest going to the local bookstore and looking for any art marketing or photo market book for your region. You are going to send out lots of portfolios so be aware of the cost factor, and remember to not include original images because you arent going to get these portfolios back. Don't be dissapointed either, if you send out 20 portfolios and you only get one call back, you are doing ok. Art marketing is not easy, and it does cost a lot

Hi.

I am currently making around $700 per month from having my photos online, primarily from having Google Adsense adverts on my photo web site (I give my photos away free).

A few of my photos are really good, but the vast majority are average.

But to make a decent photo web site of your own requires a lot of technical know how and perseverence.

If you have hundreds (probably closer to a thousand) of REALLY good photos then you can make a decent living from uploading your photos to the main stock photo web sites (See first 2 links in the sources list below.) This is very time consuming, but not difficult..

I don't really agree that you/she needs to do a photography degree or study lighting for years in order to make good photos. In my opinion there is a lot of unjustified snobbery when it comes to photography. Top 'photo experts' may say that your photo is the worst thing that they have ever seen - but Joe Public may love it and download your image thousands of times! (Beauty is in the eye of the beholder).

(NB - this answer relates only to making money from your photos online - I have very little experience of the offline scenario - but the great thing about making money form your photos online is that it requires very little or NO investment)...
