try the last hour of light and the first hour
settings depends on the depth you want and other factors like available light, i personally like : ISO 100, F32, 8-15 seconds, in the last moments of daylight - will require a tripod It all depends on different factors.
ISO setting
speed of lens
direction of lighting
point of interest
If you want the best resolution, go with the lowest ISO, usually 100 or 200.
The speed of the lens will decide how much flexibility you have as a f/2.8 lens will let you set a higher shutter speed for any given exposure than a f/5.6 lens.
The direction of the lighting, and where within the image your point of interest lies will be the main determining factor. If you have strong back-lighting, you may have to override the auto exposure as the brightness of the background will put your main subject in deep shadow. If your point of interest (friend posing or someone in the shade of a tree) lies in shadow, you'll have to increase your exposure.
When shooting from a distance, with a bright sky background, it's usually best to zoom in, lock in a closeup exposure, then recompose and take the picture.
The great thing about modern digital cameras is the ability to review your photo immediately afterwards on the lcd screen. When in doubt, underexpose, because you can rectify that more easily in the computer than a washed out image. auto setting
