What is the best brand of digital camera?why?

If you're talking about DSLRs, then Canon and Nikon are still on top.

However, in the compact field- things have gotten extremely competitive. Canon is still hanging on with excellent products, but they're not always the very best in class.

Watch Panasonic very closely- Their FZ series of ultrazooms has been on top for a few years, and is only recently being met with competition from Sony's H-series and Canon's S3IS.

For compact cameras: Canon (SD700IS), Panasonic (28mm wide angle Leica lens and image stabilization built in their FX series), Fuji (for incredible high ISO capability in their F30/F20).

Not to say that there aren't other great cameras out there- but these are the best.

The best advice when picking a digital camera is to buy a brand that has always made cameras, like Fuji, Olympus, or Kodak, they pay attention to the details that make good cameras, like where buttons are best positioned, etc....

Don't buy Sony's or Hewlett Packards, or anything like that...Sony makes the best video cameras and HP maybe is best at printers...they make the worst digital cameras

What's best for me might not be best for others.

Just go to a store and pick what you like, not what others like

SAMSUNG. Trust me its the best, you can upgrade the firmware of the device and even upgrade the software so you can stay upt o date. and it is really durable and works hard! it's really cool! it has a sexy design and its really convenient to use!

Olympus is pretty good
they have really good camera lens.

The same brand that has been in the industry for half a century.

Brand like Nikon, Canon and Mamiya for digital SLR, they are the choice of the professionals and afficionados.

Brand like Olympus, Pentax, and Kodak for digital camera are the choice of photo enthusiast, as these brand know how photography should work, and user who buys these brand have been using camera for quiet some time, know how to use one, and knows what kind of photo they want.

Consumer brand like Sony, HP, Dell are for the first timer who never know anything about camera, want to own one, and will only use this for snapping photo regardless of the result. Maybe years later when they learn more about photography, they will ditch this brand and go for a higher end model.

Better Brand

Which car is better? Chevy or Ford? Porsche or BMW? Mercedes or Lexus?

If you are "not a pro," perhaps you would do best by going with the recommendation of your local camera shop pro or a friend who has something that he/she likes. If you have someone who is willing to help you learn how to use a particular camera, add ten points to that brand in your decision making process.

I do like the other answers that at least suggest you stick to a company such as Nikon or Canon who have been making CAMERAS instead of toaster ovens for the past 75 years...
