What's the best digital camera under $199, good looking and good quality?

any suggestions appreciated :)

My brother has the A540 and my mother-in-law has the A530 - on my recommendation - and neither one has stopped speaking to me yet. Based on this and experience with other Canon Powershot cameras, I am now recommending the A550 as a nice and relatively inexpensive camera. The A550 has more pixels than the A540, but offers less user control.

The A540 has been discontinued, but the updated version in the A550.

The A550 costs $135 at B&H and, of course, you'll need a memory card.

The A560 is about $160 and that makes it worth considering, too. It has a slightly bigger LCD and they claim that it's one stop faster than the A550 in speed.

For just a little over your budget, look at the cool Canon SD1000.

You can also google the camera brand, model and megapixel of the camera...this will pop up a lot of websites with information on this particular camera.

I guarantee you wont regret buying this camera it is great!

Even though I personally own this ultra compact camera, I would still like to highly recommend the purchase of a Nikon Coolpix L10 for the following reasons:

1. Besides taking well-exposed hi-quality 5 megapixel pictures, it uses a standard set of rechargeable double AA batteries which last a very long time;
2. Has a 3x optical zoom;
3. Takes "continuous" 2 frames per second "action/sports" images;
4. Has macro feature for close-ups of small objects focused under 6 inches;
5. The flash setting for "red-eye" correction is on the navigator wheel and not within a submenu;
6. It's very small and light;
7. Uses inexpensive SD memory cards - a 2 gig card sells for $19 at samys.com;
8. The digital video feature takes wonderful "sound" videos which are noise free. It records the piano very well with it's built-in microphone;
9. It comes with a USB 2.0 transfer cable which you connect to your USB computer port;
10. Has tripod mount on bottom of camera;
11. And the price is a mere $119 [sold at Samy's Camera - samys.com, and Staples.com.]

Good luck!

Sony cyber-shot 7.2 mega pixels

The Canon Powershot A550 is popular, but it's kind of ugly and the pictures have high noise. Plus, you have to wait 4.5 seconds between shots if you have flash on, which means you're going to miss shots. But then again, they still take AA batteries, which is a plus.

The Kodak Photosmarts are ok, but I think Kodak is better as a picture-printing company than a camera-making company.

My favorite budget camera is the Sony W55 is a very nice camera for its price (still under your budget, yay!) and takes pretty good pictures. It has Sony's new Smart Zoom image stabilizer. If you budget is even tighter, you can shoot for the W30, which has a 1/2 inch smaller screen but all the same features for $20 less. They're both 7.2 megapixel with 3x optical zoom. There's a 1.5 second start-up time and are really quick if you want to take continuous shots. Plus, it takes videos in MPEG, which lets you take a lot of video on your memory card. It has 56mb of internal memory, but you should really buy their Memory Stick, which, unfortunately is all that will work on Sony products. It's the same thing that you put in a PSP. They're more expensive than an SD card, though.

Anyway, good luck with your camera search!

You can't go wrong with the Canon A630. 4X optical zoom, 8 megapixels. In addition to auto setting it has manual controls. It's very good on AA rechargeables, will give you an excellent 8X10 print. According to Website dpreview.com Beach Camera has it for $182-
Of course a cutsie pink camera is the Sony Cyber-shot W-55.

I have my own electronics store online. Go there. I have a lot of them for sale. You can buy it from the vendor with the lowest price, so you can compare them side-by-side.
