I disagree. For the $300-$500 range Canon make far superior cameras with a lot more features. While Nikon make fantastic professional cameras, their budget range isn't too great on picture quality.

I've found the Canon PowerShot range is good and the EOS Digital Rebel XT is a lot of camera for the money with amazing picture quality. That will be my next camera.

Nikon is a greater.

I think that Konica Minolta are great value for excellent quality.

I suggest you go to a big camera shop and insist on trying out all the cameras in your price range and look out for shutter speed (because some cameras have a lengthy delay from depressing the shot button to actually taking the picture) and zoom.

Olympus, Canon, Sony and Nikon are the best brands. They make some of the most amazing and powerful cameras. Canon has the most experience.

That's a broad question and the answer depends on the main purpose of your camera use. Do you to use it for spontaneous shots or do you want to use it for its zoom capability? Do you want to carry it in say your jeans pocket or it doesn't matter? Are you going to do a lot of cropping or do you want to just share pictures via emails? Do you need image stabilization or high ISO? What about print size and noise-related issues? Fine these out and check out the following websites:

For a super-zoom camera Canon S2IS is worth taking a look. For a compact camera, though not yet released in America, the Fujifilm F30 looks very promising and probably is worth the wait (it won TIPA 2006 best compact digital camera in Europe and DIMA 2006 innovative digital product award).

Buying a digital camera? Hold it! You have to read "CCD Malfunction" posts first, or you'll end up with a camera that cannot take pictures later.
