What is the best digital camera for indoor sports? You would make out best with an SLR with a long, fast lens. By long, I mean about 200 mm (if there is a lens factor of about 1.5, giving a yield of 300 mm equivalent) and by fast, I mean about f/2.8 or faster. You will also want a nice burst rate for sequential shooting.
I like Nikon's and am familiar with their equipment. I am not familiar with your budget. To me, the "best" would be the most expensive Nikon body you could buy, like the D2X or D2Xs, and then probably their 18-200 VR zoom lens. The vibration reduction is for real and it would help in sports photography. It's "only" f/3.5-5.6, but the VR would effectively add some low end. Except that the short end is 70 mm, which might be too tight for indoors, Nikon makes a beautiful 70-200 mm VR lens with a fixed f/2.8 aperture.
If you have some real world budget considerations, the new D80 looks like it would meet most requirements and I now for a fact that the D200 would. They both have predictive auto-focus that would make it easier to follow the action and still focus in difficult situations.
Canon may have a better selection of lenses to choose from and I will rely on other members to provide an answer. Depending on what kind you want - point and shoot, DSLR, etc.
Just get one with a High ISO rating with low noise (1600-3200) , and a long optical zoom. or a long lens. Hi, you can use Google picasa to help your photography.
picasa is a Google's photo software. It's what should've come with your camera.
