Awesome stuff from my experience instead of buying a camera which isn't much better and without memory and a phone on its own.

First, go to the site of a large camera retailer and navigate to their digital camera section (I use www.henrys.ca). Make a list of cameras in your price range.

Then, go to their "used digital" section and do the same thing.

Next, go to www.dpreview.com and search for reviews of the models you have chosen. This site scientifically tests important performance factors such as resolution, noise, shutter lag and lens quality, compares similar models, and makes highly educated recommendations based on considerable experience.

Finally, make a short list, head down to your local camera store and try 'em out for hand fit and overall ergonomics.

Since your price range restricts you to digital point-and shoot, I should forewarn you that one of the big issues with these cameras is poor low-light (ISO 200 and up) performance. While you're at dpreview, compare the sample images from cameras on your list with those from more expensive models and see if the pictures are up to your standards.

Also, the flashes on these smaller cameras have limited range and will cause an inordinate amount of red-eye.

Unless your budget is absolutely carved in stone, I would try out a DSLR -- even an older, used model will knock the stuffing out of a compact. I guess what I'm trying to say is...the best digital camera may not be under $300.
