As was mentioned, it highly depends on how much you want to spend, what you want to take pictures of, how creative you want to be, and mostly, how much time you will realistically take to learn your camera. Do you want to learn how to make the great pictures you see? Do you care about things like depth of field, ISO, and manual options?
If you want a very basic point and shoot, I recommend the Kodak EasyShare C300. It's what I have now. It is very limited, no preset picture modes, nothing. It's got 3x digital zoom, picture, silent 30 second movie, and night mode. That's it. Great for snapshots of friends, family, traveling.. basically, making memories. 100 bucks at Walgreens.
My boyfriend has a Cybershot dsc-w7. It is also a point and shoot, but has a lot more features. I forget how many picture modes it has, but there are quite a few. Different lighting modes and that sort of thing. Another cool little thing about it, is that you can buy an adapter ring for it, and thus shop for lenses, filters, etc. The downfall to this though, I found, is that lenses/filters for that size are fairly limited. I bought him a .45 wide angle/macro, 2x telephoto and 5 filters (UV, Polarizer, Fluorescent, Diffuser and Cross Screen). So it's pretty neat, but it doesn't begin to compare with the opportunities and quality of your dSLR (digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras. Camera itself runs.. 350 bucks at Circuit City, I think.
The only dSLR camera I know even a tinsy bit about (highlight the tinsy) is the d50. Heard great things about it, and it's the one I will probably buy for myself. Five or six preset picture modes, and creative freedom. Several shooting priorities (AE, aperture priority, shutter priority). Then there's the glorious Manual for the true photographer in you. Control the aperture, shutter speed and ISO. This comes in handy if you want to create special effects, such as a blurred waterfall. Your camera's automatic settings might have a slight blur, but not much of one. But, if you open your aperture and slow your shutter speed, you'll have a beautiful, soft look as it flows over the rocks. Body: 600 bucks. Lenses: anywhere from $200 to over 1000. It largely depends upon pricepoint.

It is a great digital camera, for $200 you can not go wrong ! no hp. the dual-lens ultra wide kodak v570. i have it!
rocks like hell! Depends on what you have to spend and what you want to photograph. Most everyone these days uses a digital for family functions, vacations etc. The most dependable, user friendly cameras with the best features, the best bang for the buck have been good old Kodaks. I swore I'd never "step down" from my Nikons and expensive sony's, cannons etc but after having them all, I am sold on the Kodak with it's docking station. I prefer the ones that use rechargeable AA batteries because if a battery goes dead there is always a drugstore on a near corner where you can buy some and be on your way. The DX series has been my favorite with the video with audio. as far os reviews and build go the canon rebel xt is the newest and best Canon EOS 30D Check out www.dpreview.com reviews.
