Given your budget, I recommend a digital SLR. You can't go wrong with the Canon 350D (a.k.a. RebelXT) or the Nikon D50. Both can be purchased with a very decent lens as a kit. Add a 1GB memory card, and you're good to go.

1 suggestion ---- go for the optical zoom 3x atleast. You get nice panasonic cameras at that price.
