a camera that has good value without compromising quality. It depends on how much zoom you are looking for and how much control you want such as manual exposure settings. Also, how many megapixels do you want. I would say that 3MP is the minimum for any digital camera but for amateur and point and shoot photography you probably don't want to buy one with more than 8MP. Prices have come down recently and a 5MP camera should suite most people but there are some excellent 8MP values out there.
If you aren't sure what you are looking for, I recommend you take a look at Cnet reviews and go from there. But as of this time my favorite digital camera is the Dimage X1 8MP with 3x optical zoom which also happens to be a slim design and at about $230 is a very good value.
