What is the best digital camera for darker lighting and concerts?

hi everyone im looking for some suggestions on a digital camera. im looking for something affordable but something that takes good pictures. i take alot of photos at concerts and shows my boyfriend plays. the lighting is dark in clubs and the pictures always come out to dark or when flash is used to blurry. right now i have a Kodak easy share. it takes beautiful pictures in natural light but anything other then that and the quality is crappy. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks so much

First thing is to understand what is going on when you take a picture. You push a button and the shutter opens and lets light in to register the image on film or in your case 'digital media' for lack of a better term. The AMOUNT of light is what you are concerned with in taking the shots you mention. Forget about your flash. The most powerful flash you can buy will only throw useful light for twenty feet or so. Flash is just not an option to get more light to your 'digital media'. A remote flash set up near the subject would work, but you don't want to get into that. ($$$) OK, to get more light into the camera, is to keep the shutter open longer. I don't know your set up, but there should be some way to set the shutter speed. Look into the manual and it will tell you how to do that. Set the shutter speed as slow as it will let you and experiment in low light conditions. Up the shutter speed little by Little until you get what you want. REMEMBER, the longer the shutter is open, the more dramatic movement will effect the clarity of your pictures. a tripod is useful in keeping the camera steady, but how practical that is another matter.

The only compact digicams that are good in low light situations are the Fuji F-series and S-series cameras. To get better than that, you'll need a DSLR.

The F20, F30, F31fd and F40fd. The F30/31 are hard to find, but they're really the best. The F20 is dirt cheap and will give you extremely high quality images.

If you need a bigger zoom capability, consider the larger S6000fd.

One tip that works for me is to dial in a bit of negative exposure compensation. Maybe -2/3 stop to -1.5 stop. If it's night, you want your black backgrounds to be black, not gray. Plus, you'll be less likely to overexpose your highlights.

I still use my old D100 when shooting concerts or performances using stage lighting. I can bump the ISO up to 6400 ISO plus a EV boost of another stop. Then I use a fast lens (f/2.8) to further increase my shutter speed.

It may be a little unrealistic to expect low noise images similar to what you could expect shooting outdoors at say 100 ISO. By nature the lighting at concerts provides a lot less light than the sun then add color gels and you are shooting in close to darkness. However with the setting listed above, the images will be sharp and show no or very little camera movement.

No perfect digicam and low-light is the hardest situation to take good pictures. But the best low-light is definitely the Fujifilm F-series.
