Which D-SLR camera is best for someone upgrading from an advanced compact camera?

Check out the Sony A200 and the Pentax K10D. Both have Image Stabilization (IS) in the camera body.

The A200 can use every Minolta Maxxum AF lens made since 1985. Sony is also releasing a Carl Zeiss line of lenses.

The K10D can use every AF K-mount lens made. It can also use every manual focus K-mount lens made since 1975 with some limitations.

PENTAX K100D it is the best. That is what I have.

You will not be upgrading. You will be moving into a whole different area. You will now have to know how to adjust the f/stops, shutter speeds, use the flash correctly and adjust the ISO and know what all that means to each of your shoots.

It is sort of like moving from a nice Canondale off-road bike to a Harley... yes they both have two wheels, but the technique riding them and the skills are all different.

Right now the DSLR with the most bang for the buck is the Nikon D40 with a 18-55mm lens for under $500.

You may want to take a class in photography so you don't get too frustrated.

The two best brands with the best and most available lenses are Nikon and Canon.

Look at the Nikon D40 and the Canon Rebel XT or XTi.

As Fhotoace says you may want to take a course to learn how to operate the camera and what everything means. Buy the camera from a good private photo shop. They will be able to explain to you enough to get you started and may also run beginner classes.
