I'm planning to buy a new digital camera for my birthday. I'm not new with the digital camera scene as I own a KODAK EASYSHARE CX7430 at this moment but after it fell and snapped open....I'm going to have to buy a new one. Well anyway, I'm pretty happy with the way kodak cameras work so I'm planning to buy another Kodak brand camera.....except this is where I get stuck......I don't know which camera to get! Should I get the KODAK V705 or the KODAK V610? Can somebody tell me which one is better from the two? or if you know any other camera that might be better from these two can you tell me which ones and why. Thank you. First of all you need to know what you want from a camera. Pic quality? Zoom, size, portability? that is the first think I ask before recommending a camera.
The next thing I would usually say to you is dont go with a kodak.
However, I just looked up your camera, and unfortunately it looks like you want a camera with unique feature (two lenses let you go wide angle and have zoom in a single small portable camera) I dont know of another camera offering that feature.
The thing kodak lacks is straight out of camera picture quality - if that is what you are willing to sacrifice for these features then get one of these. If not, then...
If you want a small camera, good quality, ease of use, go with a canon elph series - even older ones are pretty cheap and have great quality right no editing needed. Anything from a SD300 to SD800 depending on your price range.
There are some competetive sony's, as well as Fuji cameras in the portable and good quality range. Nikon point and shoot cameras (non-slr's) haven't been very great lately, although their pro/ semi pro cameras are top of the line or close.
panasonic has some interesting cameras in the small and portable with a wider angles.
Sorry for the lack of details - for a great reference see the website below - if you don't want to read the nitty gritty on each camera - just jump to the conclusions page and read the pros and cons and final rating - they are very helpful and accurate usually.
Read the conclusion on the V610 - you shouldn't just go and trust any review, but do take it into consideration. It got a pretty poor review. The 705 doesn't have a review posted, but you can find some user reviews (mixed opinions) or better yet look at other sites for reviews.
good luck.
and I personally wouldnt buy either unless you NEED that combination of coolness/ultraportable and zoom/wide angle combo. see Morey000's answer.
also - this is hard to resist (and camera companies know this! -they often add useless megapix) but DO NOT let mpix be a big factor in your decision (unless you are making large prints 8x10+.. (some of the best deals are with 3-4mpix older canon's that i mentioned.) Report It
if you have good budget then go for sony or canon they are better then kodak even panasonic have one good camera with shock free Sony Cybershot D-200 :)
Awesome camara.
Any Sony Cybershot is pretty awesome.
Check them out. They are both really neat cameras. Innovative and unique packaging and a nifty dual lens idea. They both use two separate lenses and ccds to combine for a large zoom range in a compact form factor. You do sacrifice a bit of image quality because of this, but for non-professional needs - you may not even notice.
The main difference is if you want really wide angle shots (23mm) or big zoom shots (380mm). Get the 705 if you're a wide angle buff, or the V610 if you like to capture stuff that's far away.
Personally- I use the wide angle end of my zoom and wish it were wider, more than I use the long end of my zoom and wish it were longer. My personal preference would be the 705, but it really depends on the kind of photography you like.

akademic below provides some good thoughts. to note- that dpreview's reviews are quite biased towards image quality (and they admit it). If you're not a stickler for the finest in image quality and don't ever intend to print photos larger than 8x10", you may never notice the difference. Sure- there are cameras that offer better IQ, but not ones that have such cool packaging of two lenses into such a tiny and neat looking body. Plus- having a 23mm wide angle is a wonderful feature.
and- Kodak's offer great user interfaces and have some of the best color rendering of any camera company. Regular people love Kodaks (they are the third top selling digicam brand behind Canon and Sony). It's just that the reviewers who are pixel peeping don't always rate them so high. |
