What kind of camera should I buy for my internship for this magazine I work for?

I ended up getting this job for a magazine where I go to concerts and take pictures of the band, but I really don't know what camera I should buy. Should it be digital? My friend who's been doing this forever paid $800 dollars for hers.

I'm in front of the guards and everyone blocking the audience so I'm right there in the front to take all the pictures I want.

It should be digital. You should get one that is at least 10.2 Megapixels. Cannon D20 or Nikon D200, Nikon D80 are good. If you wait until Nov. get the Nikon D300.
Go to www.samys.com They have good prices, infor on their stuff and have manufact. rebates.
Get Ultra Scandisk memory card, at least 2Gigabytes.

Ask the magazine. If they use a specific brand (Canon, Nikon, etc.) stick with the same brand. You might be able to borrow some of their equipment (flash, lens, etc.) in the future.

But otherwise, just about any digital SLR would do. Just spend the money on good lens (with wide aperture). You are talking picture of band (mostly in dark areas) so you will need a wide aperture.

Make sure you do NOT get a SLR style camera. Their CCD is not as good in low light.

Even though I think most DSLR are about the same in photo quality, you should think about sticking with Canon or Nikon. They have long history and you will probably find it easier to get support (used lens, flash, repair or parts) in the future. I once had a Minolta (film) camera. Worked great. When it malfunctioned, the camera shop told me that he can't fix it because he can't get the parts. He would have to send it to Minolta (it would be almost cheaper to buy a new camera). But in the back he had tons of Canons and Nikons that he salvaged for parts.

Also I used to buy tons of used lens. As long as there are no scratches they are good a new. But I could never find Minolta used lens.

Good Luck.

I would say go for a digital slr not a compact digital... ask your magazine what format they would prefer..the output would be alot quicker in digital and overall probably cheaper in the long run, seeing as though film is being removed from most australian stores and major camera companies no longer manufacture as much film, and if you use film you would also have to scan in your film...

I would spend atleast $500 on a camera if you are looking to do this professionally..

Canon 40D's are okay

ask around...

The first thing is to ask them what they want and then use the camera that will provide that. Do they need transparencies? Digital image files?

What camera do you have now? What lenses?

You must have had a decent portfolio to get the job, so just use what you have been using.

if they want transparencies use a film camera like the ashti, if they want digi files use a DSLR, really i would think lens first
