Does this camera really have 12 MP?

Im about to buy a digital camera. THIS IS THE DESCRIPTION

PICTURE RESOLUTIONS : *12.0 MP:4032x3024,*7.0 MP:3072x2304,5.0MP:2560x1920,3.0 MP:2048x1536,1.3 MP:1280x960,VGA:600x400 (*Via Interpolated )

Image Sensor: CMOS 5.17 MP

Does it really have 12 MP? what does via interpolated mean?

It means that it really is not a 12MP camera. Actually it is a 5.17MP camera and by using an interpolation algorithm they are stretching the picture to 12MP.

Interpolation is a method of constructing new data points from a discrete set of known data points. It's like placing a new point between two existing points. For a camera, it is like putting a pixel between two existing.

No it does not have 12 MP.

"Via interpolation" means that it evaluates the pixels it does have and plugs in its best guess for what might have made up the rest of the image. It looks like it is an ACTUAL 5 MP camera.

5 MP isn't a bad thing for the average snapshot, but I'd also be wary about the lens, which you did not mention. Be sure that it does not count on "digital zoom" for any zooming capability. Okay, it's okay if it HAS digital zoom, but be sure that there is an optical zoom component as well. If it has only got digital zoom (which I suspect with an "interpolated" camera), you will not be happy AT ALL!

It does have 12mp, but only when you stretch the specs.

Look at all the Resolution ratings with the "*" next to them. The only one that isn't a result of Interpolation, is 5mp, so that's closer to the truth. Notice the Image Sensor size: 5.17 MP.

Avoid this camera, as I've seen it described here before. Unknown brand, no support, and digital zoom only.

Does it really have 12 MP? Well, it's like asking if I can lift 500 pounds. Yes I can (but only if you let me lift a few pounds at a time, give me a few breaks, and lunch).

You can and will find better choices.

I hope this is helpful for you.

As other people said, the image is stretched. But also, megapixels don't really mean that much. Some cameras take far better pictures in far better lighting, etc. I would make my choice based on reveiws.

And make sure it has optical zoom.
