but.... heres what i think...

film cameras are going out of style... but digital cameras for me are a bad investment.. or a very good one. if you take alot of pictures and i mean alot. or its what you do for a living... then digital is the way to go. but mind you after 5 or so years that 8mega pixel cam would be worth less than that bag it comes in to protect it.

so heres a tip. buy a digital camera thats worth lets say 4 years. to you. and never look back...

ps tho. 8 megapixels. is way more resolution for the average user. unless you plan to make 50 ft billboards on the side of the road. 8 megapixels. would be clean and crisp for blowups as big as 12R. prints.

oh yah... no matter what you pick... get a slr camera.
nothing beats the fun your going to have on those creative shots that you can do with a slr. also a slr camera (atleast the latest ones) can react and take pictures as fast as you can.. even faster... something good to have when you want to take those critical "unposed" or action shots.... (where as you have to zoom or go wide very fast) something consumer cameras can't do....

It might be a good camera, but do you really want to carry around such a large one when you can get a pocket size digital camera that takes pictures practically as good? I bought a big digital SLR and found it too cumbersome, so ended up getting rid of it.

Personally unless your a professional photographer I don't see why you need something so large and so expensive. Everyone has a preference of course. Mega Pixels, Brand things like that. Try going to your local superstore and play with a few in there photo/electronics's department. Then if you find one you want and have the time and patients look around on the net, Craig's list, eBay and see what kind of deal you can get. My husband and i both have digital camera's. He likes his name brand and I like mine. I have gone through about 3 or 4 in the last few years since the prices have gone done and the mega pixels have gone up.

You would probably be happier with a Sony DSC-R1. For less money (about $800) it is a better camera. It's not a dSLR, but for most people that is an advantage, not a disadvantage. There are tools that a fixed lens digital camera has that help you take great pictures. These tools are unavailable in (except in one, extremely expensive) dSLR cameras.

Also, the kit lens that comes with entry level dSLR cameras aren't good. The Sony DSC-R1 comes with a very nice lens. It will outperform any dSLR under $1500 unless you pony up several hundred dollars for a decent lens for the dSLR. Even then, it's competitive.

Yeah definitely , one of the good cameras produced by canon. But make sure that the size is big but very good for professional photgraphers.If you aren't going to make professional photography then lot of amateurs models available at lesser cost.
Since this is a Dslr if you are planning to interchange lens and shoot , without thinking you can buy , as canon's back end support is also good................

The canon rebel XT is a fine instrument. However- don't buy all that packaged stuff with it, as you can find better deals on all of those things, and you may want different stuff than what's in that package.

Oh- the kit lens that typically comes with the XT (18-55mm) isn't the best. Granted it's cheap, but if you really care about your image quality, there are much better lenses available for the Canon than that (but they are more $$)
