I am looking for a good digital camera/camcorder. What should I be looking for when I am shopping for one?

I'm interested in buying a good digital camera/camcorder. What should I look for when I'm shopping for this type of item and where can I find the best deals?

i would suggest finding one that works good indoors. your best bet would be to ask the people who work in the stores. when i got my camera, i bought the 'digital photography' magazine, and that gives many individual cameras a rating out of ten, and says the pros and cons of each... i found this to be the most helpful, because you also get educated on different types in the process.

resolution-more is better
warranty-longer is better
digital vs analog zoom-depends what you use it for
size-smaller is usually better
brands-rule of thumb: if you've heard of the brand, it's probably reliable. If you haven't, don't buy it unless you are sure it is good.

I'm guessing you want a hybrid camcorder and camera which takes both still photos, and motion video. When you're looking at the camcorder part, look for "3 CCD's" and resolution. It's best to get resolution at least 720p, as what they call it. On the camera part, you'll want higher resolution. Like 3.2 megapixels is almost crap, at least five megapixels. But frankly, these hybrid devices are unappealing because they make bad cameras, and bad camcorders so that they're bad at both things. Don't misunderstand me, I'm not discouraging you to buy this type of device, just letting you know.

If your budget is about $1000, look for High definition camcorders.

-You should look for the resolution (standard def vs. hi-def)
-Low light performance
-Medium of recording. If you want to edit your videos often, go for MiniDV tape ones. DVD/HDD are convinient but are compressed videos.
