How do i choose which type of digital camera i want for my daughter...?

As most of you all probably know, my daughter is about to turn 14 next week and i was wondering if i could maybe buy her a digital camera for her birthday...how do i know which type of camera to get her?

PS: if it make any more difference, she was going to maybe use it on family vacations when we go out of town or out of state...
