Is it worth it to get an extended warranty when buying a digital camera?

I just bought a Sony DSC-P200 and got the 4 year extended warranty for $60. I have 14 days to decide if I want to "return" the warranty. Should I keep it or get rid of it?

Don't bother. You should return that warranty. Four years is not at all a long time, and Sony makes good products. Unless you have a freak accident, or you are prone to stupid actions, you shouldn't need a four year warranty. Ten years might be a different story, but any damage that occurs within four years is likely to be scant, and the repairs will probably be less than $60.

What's more, warranties tend to be very restrictive. They basically mean no hacks, so you can't fool around with your camera (and so what's the fun?) without voiding your warranty. I'm not saying you should ditch the warranty and trick out your camera. I'm saying that maybe you should just stick with the manufacturer's warranty, as it should cover you fairly well.

it depends on what it covers and how you intend to use the camera. For example, I use mine almost everyday on my job, sometimes in fairly dangerous areas. I have a complete replacement warranty for any mishap...even my own fault. Well worth the money.

$60 isnt terrible, but I personally would ditch it. Just buy it with a credit card that gives you a free 1 year extension over the manufacturer's warranty. Most electronics break within the first couple of months if they are going to break. 2 years of warranty should be more than enough in almost all cases.

Does your extended warranty include a replacement clause in the event that the camera is non-repairable? If so, it's worth keeping. No one does warranty service on Sony digital cameras besides the manufacturer, and I have seen Sony cameras returned from their service center without repairs having been made. If your warranty covers you for a new camera when the old one can't be fixed, you're covered.

I read an article that extended warranties are to make the company money.
Return it.

$60 isn't much but it's probably 1/4 of the price of your camera (if you bought it at a good dealer).

If you bought it at a dependable store (best buy, circuit city), it's not bad for 4 years.

If you bought it online, the company that insured your item probably won't be around for 4 years.

If you're going to keep the camera for 4 years keep it, if not ditch it. An extended warranty may allow some additional resale value, if you do decide to update before the warranty expires.
Personally, I love electronics and tend to update my camera's/mp3/computer equipment fairly often and the original warranty is more than adequate. Most of my electronics that have needed repair have usually needed it while the original warranty was still in effect.

No! I got screwed. To make a long story short, I took it in just to get it cleaned and they told me it was unfixable so I'd have to pick a new camera. There's wasn't a new camera that had the same feature as my old one so I ended up with a piece of junk. If I had known that, I wouldn't just kept using the old one.
