i am thinking about buying a digital camera and have rarely one must less know about one. What are some specs to look for when buying? I am not looking for the best but would like one that's decent. Can you tell me what pixals are low, average, and high? As has been said, in general, the higher the number of pixels, the better the image quality. 1 megapixel is adequate for most purposes; 5 megapixel borders on professional quality; about 12 megapixels is the best out there. Lens quality also has a great impact on total image quality. Cameras made by the major camera manufacturers are generally best in this regard. (I like Nikon, myself.)

All cameras have memory cards or sticks to store pictures. If you have other digital equipment, you might try to get a camera that uses the same type of memory card as your other equipment.

Cheap and Full 1 year warranty for all batteries! It would be good to familiarize yourself with the myriad of features available and decide which are important to you. Canon entry level cameras are a little more expensive, but have great features and produce high quality images. I have heard nikon and sony have good entry level cameras as well.
Completely ignore digital zoom, you can do that after the fact with the computer and sometimes with the camera. All that is doing is croping the picture. Optical zoom, on the other hand is very useful. I would recommend staying away from anything less than 3 megapixels unless ALL you will ever do is email photos or post them on the web. More megapixels not only give you higher quality in larger photos, but also allow you to maintain decent quality when you crop a photo. You can get 3 to 5 megapixels for a really reasonable price (less than $200 - I'd avoid anything less than $125 - you won't be happy with the results). They go up from there. The standard for SLRs (interchangeable lenses and being able to fully manually control the camera) is 8 mp right now and professional cameras can exceede 16 mp - but they cost a small fortune and are overkill unless you plan to print 36 X 48 or larger. If you have never used digital, one major draw back to cheap cameras is shutter lag. It's the time from when you press the shutter button to when the picture is actually taken. You can sometimes miss a shot becuase of it.
