Which brand name of digital camera is better to buy?

Point and Shoot - any of the Sony ones are good.

DSLRs - Nikon is overrated, Sony is good, as is Canon, but I prefer Pentax. I can use the same lenses on my film camera, so I take both digi and film with me, and I don't need to bring extra lenses.

It all depends on the number of megapixels you require.

I like Canon a lot.

Canon or Sony, any Other Brands have a questionable status in my opinion

I have a Sony Cyber-Shot and it's great. I took it to a concert and it was easy to operate with the little slide down lens. It took such great pictures that I can see clearly who's on the stage performing; I also have video footage.

canon is a really good company for cameras. panasonic is also pretty good.

I have a Sony and love it. It is very small and the price has come way down. It takes stills and short videos. The memory sticks hold alot.

Which is better? Chevy or Ford? Porsche or BMW? Mercedes or Lexus? Nikon or Canon? These are all unanswerable questions as they are all "the best" in their class, depending who you ask.

If you have no personal preference, perhaps you would do best by going with the recommendation of your local camera shop pro or a friend who has something that he/she likes. If you have someone who is willing to help you learn how to use a particular camera, add ten points to that brand in your decision making process.

My leaning is to say that Canon is the better choice for small cameras (point and shoots) and Nikon is the better choice for DSLR's, but that's jus my personal preference. If you can post another question... Tell us how much you want to spend, what you plan to use the camera for most of the time, and what your prior experience is with photography. With this information, we will be much more helpful to you.

If you are talking about point and shoots I'd take a serious look at the Canon lineup. Look at sites like dcresource.com. They do a good job of in depth reviews of many cameras. It really depends on what you want. Do you want a lot of zoom or supercompact size? Do you want a camera with manual controls or not? Answering all of those question will help to narrow down which brand is truly best for you.

Don't chase megapixels. There are a lot of cameras that offer lots of megapixels but not so great image quality. 6 megapixels will likely suffice for any enlargement you'd ever want and even that is probably overkill. The quality of the lens, sensor, and image processor are much more important than a megapixel number. I'd put my old 2 megapixel Panazonic up against some of the 6 meg camera on the market today and yield better prints.
