I'm looking to finally get a digital camera mainly for taking pictures of my daughter but also whatever else we encounter, indoors or outdoors. So with that in mind action shots might come into play.
I've read that the optical zoom is more important than the digital zoom but I was just wondering what range should I be looking for? Would a 3 or 4X be suitable or would a larger range be needed? I'm not a professional photographer by any means but I just want to make sure my picture quality is good. That's really the most important thing to me. Please help! Give me any advice you can, brands, cameras, what to look for, anything to help me in buying a good camera. Also I don't care at all about the "extra features" that most people never use, I just want good quality pictures! Also not really looking to do more than 8x10 prints either. Thanks.

P.S. Last thing, I really don't want to spend anymore than $250 if possible $200. For sports & plays...what should I be looking for then? 3 or 4 x is usually good enough except for sports and school plays.
Kodak 875 (5x 8 MP)
Canon A550 (4x 6MP)
Sony W-55 (3x, 7 MP)
Nikon L-11 (3x 6 MP)
Nikon L5 (5x 7 MP) Get one with at least 10x optical. You won't regret it! I picked up my Kodak EasyShare z612 for under $200. It has 6.1 MP, so you can print pictures up to 11x17 and the 10x optical zoom. Very easy to use on the automatic settings. I think a 3x will work great.
And I think kodak is the right brand for you.
and kodak have great camera for great price. Sometimes X zoom is misleading from various manufacturers.
Check the focal length. If the lens of the point and shoot could go all the way to 200mm, then this would be quite good for action shots. But don 't expect too much for any camera under your budget.
You 're right that digital zoom is not that useful since it just scales up the pixels by means of digital signal processing without detail added. It's more important to have adequate wide angle coverage than a huge telephoto range.
Think about it...which picture are you more likely to take: three family members sitting at a table or a licence plate across the street?
The wide angle end of your digicam should be 28mm or wider (film equivalent).
Go over to www.dpreview.com and check out which cameras have this feature.
Hope this helps. |
