What sort of digital camera should I buy?

I am looking for one around $500 or less. I want one that is good at taking pictures, doesn't break easliy. Such as waterproof, shockproof, dropproof, etc. Has good zoom,a 2.5 inch screen,is compactable. i would like some suggestions and what to look for when buying on and off line. thanks

Here's a copy and paste of an answer I gave recently for a similar question:

Olympus does make a nice Stylus 770SW that's shockproof (5 ft. drop), Waterproof (33 ft.), Freezeproof (14 degrees F.), and Crushproof (220 LBF). It runs around $379 or less, has Image Stabilization and 7.1 megapixels. I think that might survive most of what you'd put it through!

I guess you need a camera with a mil spec rating.

Digital cameras are not drop-proof, shockproof or waterproof, however there are some that are for use underwater, so they will at least be waterproof down to a few meters.

There are some sporting cameras designed to be used remotely for shooting images of wild game, so they my be the closest to wyat you want. Look for cameras made by Bushnell.

Wal-Mart is your best bet. Best Buy is good but when I found my camera on Wal-Mart, I saw it on Best Buy and Best Buy wanted $15 more dollars than Wal-Mart did. Best Buy is good though if you can't find what you want at Wal-Mart. Checking online is really good b/c stores don't always have everything in the store and the site shows you EVERYTHING.
For good pictures you should look for a camera that is 3.5 megapixels or higher. And you should get one with optical zoom. Digital zoom is okay but tends to make images come out grainy b/c digital zoom takes a picture and zooms in, cramming the pixels and making the quality of the image go down. Keep in mind though that most people assume that just b/c a camera is good quality means it will take excellent pictures-but what they don't know is that it's about the person BEHIND the camera rather than the camera itself. I don't know of any digital camera that is waterproof, but I'm sure you can find one. As for drop proof and shock proof, I don't know of any company that makes those kinds of cameras. However, most cameras come with warranties and you sign your name, address, phone number, date when camera was purchased, where it was purchased at and so on on the warranty form that it comes with. So when you drop your camera or something, the company will get you a new one and you don't have to pay anything.
Sony and Samsung are decent companies but you should research any camera and it's company before buying it so you are positive that your money is going at the best deal. You can find opinions about electronics and lots of other things at http://www.epinions.com.

'Hope this helps!

Get Oympus FE-210

It's a good camera and it's selling at $299 at Audio House.

Lottie, you can get a GREAT digital camera within the budget you're looking for. I would really take a look at the i832 made by Polaroid. Trusted brand name, isn't it?

Have a look at this great piece of technology right here:
