2) Think about how you plan to use the images (computer screens are easy, large prints do require more megapixel. But remember doubling the resolution requires quadrupling the megapixels).
3) Determine your budget (allowing for a cheap case, another digital media card -- preferably at least 512 to 1 gb and, ideally a spare battery)
4) What features do you want/need and which camera have them at your price point. (See research, below).
5) Try them out in your hand and see how they feel to you.

A few things to remember: Digital zoom is meaningless as it is really just an image crop -- you can do the same thing on your computer. The difference between a 4 mp and a 5 mp is just not that huge. The quality of the lens is a biggie. I guess it depends on how much you're willing to shell out. 3 megapixels on a camera is pretty much standard these days, which is good enough for you to make your regular size prints. If you do intend to make bigger size prints, then a camera with more pixels is advisable.
As for the case with extra zoom, 3x is the going standard feature (of optical zoom), which is very often not sufficient. It is definitely a big plus point to have more zoom. However, the extra price that you will end up paying for extra zoom is gonna burn bigger holes in your pocket than investing in a camera with a higher resolution.
Ultimately it comes down to how much of a compromise are you willing to make on the kind of photographs you wanna take. If you wanna take up photography for more than just amateur photography, I would recommend more zoom. |
