Referbished Kodak Easy Share M853 8.2 why will it only go to 8.1MP when its a 8.2 camera?

I just bought a Referbished Red Kodak Easy Share M853 8.2MP Digital Camera from e-bay i was looking at the setting of Megapixels on the camera and noticed it doesnt go to up to 8.2 it only goes to 8.1 i was wondering why this is?? There is no setting any where for 8.2 when the camera is a 8.2MP digital camera... is it suppose to be like that or what??

This camera (refurbished or new, does not matter) has 8.1 effective megapixels.

What exactly an effective megapixel? Well, that's the actual number of megapixels that camera produces when taking a shot. The thing is, all cameras use bayer matrix to interpolate the data physically captured. Each physical sensor captures either red, green, or blue component of the light, then it uses the specific sensor pattern and a tricky algorithm that uses the light captured by adjacent sensors to determine actual color to use for those pixels.

Because of those algorithms and their variations, some cameras produce an image that is a bit smaller than actual matrix. So in your camera case, while there are 8.2 million red, green and blue sensors on the matrix, after processing the signal received from them you get 8.1 million of actual pixels of combined colors. That's why the fine print somewhere in manual or elsewhere should say 8.1 effective megapixels.

So nothing is wrong with the camera and the fact that it's been refurbished. Just the way those cameras work.
