Can anyone identify this lens, and will it work on a Nikon D40X? |
I've been chatting with friends about getting a new camera. One of them wants to give me this lens: DO NOT TRY AND MOUNT THIS LENS ON A D40x! It will possibly result in having to send your camera body back to Nikon and a repair charge for user abuse. The only problem is, that this answer is totally incorrect. The D40 and D40x are the first digital bodies that will not be damaged if a pre-AI lens is used. Report It The D40/D40x is the only digital body that can take non-AI lens, those made before 1977. That said, there are some lenses made in that period that are incompatible with some bodies, and it will pay to consult the lens compatibility chart in your manual for details. This lens may work on your D40x but you will have to focus and expose manually. The D40 and D40x lack an internal lense focusing drive and can only work with DX series lenses. It's probably a good lens and certanly worth trying on you 40x if you don't mind manual operation. That lense will NOT work fully with a D40 or D40x as it doesn't have the required autofocus motor built-in. It will not meter, as it lacks the electrical contacts of current lenses. You can use it in manual mode only. The Micro-NIKKOR-P.C Auto 1:3.5 f=55mm is an extremely sharp lens. I have two, on very old one that has bellow comp built in (so I can use an external light meter for unusual lighting) and the other for use with the internal meter. You can use this lens on the D40X, but ONLY when the camera is in the manual mode. You will have to set the shutter speed and lens aperture the old-fashioned way. This is by no means an impossible task 鈥?it was all we had for 50 years or more 鈥?but it is not very convenient. You will have to focus manually, but you can use the electronic rangefinder (focus confirmation beep) if you desire. |
