What are some good SLR lenses for my Canon?
Question Details: I have a Canon Rebel XTi, and I am wondering what some pretty good lenses are? I want a big zoom. And, I am not looking to spend very much right now, so preferably $350 and under at the moment. But don't let the price stop you from telling me a good lense from a bad! Any good flashes as well? The EF series for Canon have good quality optics, unfortunately they also have the price. Because the lens are about as good as you can get, they never loose value. Try this site... It lists at least one person's opinion of their favorite Canon lenses.
http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/rev... With $350 you can probably get a 28-200 f3.5-f5.6 USM - which is exactly what I got. Well you can't really compare it with the L series but it does the job perfectly for its price. If you don't have it already, go buy the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8II.
This is a prime (non-zooming) lens that is the perfect length for portraits on your camera (80mm equivalent), and a good length for general photography. Prime lenses generally perform better at a given focal length than a comparable quality zoom at that length. So even if you have a zoom that covers 50mm, but this too!
This lens will be sharper, have better color, and perform better in low light than any consumer-grade zoom you may have. You will be able to do great shallow depth-of-field (background blurry) shots.
All of this for only $80. Its just about the best deal in lenses. The only downside is that it's not built like a tank: careful handling is key (not like the pro grade "L"s designed to take a lickin').
You will not get a better lens for double this price.
Other lenses to consider in your range: EF85mm f/1.8 (better, but more expensive), EF24mm f/2.8 (best affordable wide-angle), or if you're looking for a standard zoom, the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 used is killer glass and probably available used in your range.
I just noticed your comment on a big zoom, which I assume to mean a telephoto. The only telephoto zoom I'd consider close to your range is the 70-200 f/4L, which can be had for $450 used if you comb the net carefully. Its a superb lens. Avoid the 70-300 zooms (other than the IS versions) if you can help it. |
