Serious amateur --which camera?

Money is a huge issue affecting which camera I can get. I wouldn't say that I'm too incredibly picky, but I know what I want and what I need in order to let my photography grow and I'm having a hard time picking a camera that fits my specifications. A DSLR is out of the question but I've been looking at the Fujifilm Finepix S6000FD
It's a little too expensive right now, though, so I've also glanced at Fujifilm's S700 as well. I checked it out at a store and it handled nicely, but is lacking a few things that I'm looking for.

What is the big difference between these two cameras besides price and the obvious manual focus lens?

And since it wont hurt. Maybe somebody has another camera in mind for me?
What I want:
- allows me to manually set exposure and aperture
- manual focus would be amazing, as well
- under $300

I dont care about looks and I can get used to the feel of most cameras. I'm really just concerned with progressing my photography to the most of my money's worth.

If these two are your final choices, I would go with the S6000FD in a heartbeat.

See http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstei... and read the comments. The S700 (aka S5700) is okay as a convenient snapshot camera, but it will not move you into the serious side of photography.

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_... tells me that the S6000FD has a larger sensor (almost twice the size) and this will give you better image quality. See http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstei... for a comparison between these two sensor sizes. Read the commentary. Okay, it's not a "pure" test because of a few differences, but I think it is still conclusive. Okay, the cameras are both Canon, but I am sure that the Fuji's would show a similar difference.

According to your list, you want the S6000FD because it offers aperture and shutter priority and the S700 does not.

I see that B&H Photo (available through Yahoo! Shopping) has the S6000FD for $325 and then there is a $50 mail-in rebate. Go for it!

Try looking on craigslist. I found a new Kodak z712 there for $120

I was in your boat several months ago. I looked all across the vast www and eventually made my way to my friendly neighborhood Ritz Camera. I shudder to think it would have been half as easy had I not known someone who worked there, but they listened to my needs and considered my limitations and set me on my way with the Nikon Coolpix S4. It's not for everybody but it fulfilled my criteria better than the ones I was looking at at the time. DSLR's are/were also out of the question, but I would if I only had that kind of cash to burn.

ok if you save just a little more you can find the fujifilm finepix S9100 for anywhere from $317-360. it has all the bells and whistles of the 6000 and it is full auto or full manual...yes i do have the camera and it is one heck of a camera... i did pick it up for $350 at the time....

ok i just found it for $319 at the following location:

go to cnet.com and type the s9100 in or got to cameralabs.com and type the camera in and read the user reviews not the editor reviews. the users own these camera and give honest reviews.

here is a picture gallery for the S9100...you will be impressed by the quality of the images it can take:

i have noticed that alot of canon people are getting scared of fuji cameras for some strange reason...it is not the camera but the user...
