Why does my AF-S nikkor 55-200mm lens get dark?

When i first bought the nikkor lens for my finepix s2 pro camera and i looked through the viewfinder, everything was dark, then the next day i used it, it got normal and everything was nice and light, and then it got dark but now is light.

Point being, why does it do that? I do nothing differently yet it still does that.

The only thought I have is that you've pressed the depth of field preview button while holding the camera. That button stops down the aperture to the shooting setting, darkening the viewfinder, but also showing you the actual depth of field.

You'll find the button for that on the camera body, just where your fingertips might press when holding the grip.

Hope that helps.
