If camera lenses are round, then why are pictures, TV and movie screens rectangular?

because the film or image chip are rectangular.

There's no reason why they couldn't be round, but I guess not many people want round pictures. I'll bet you that when the first cameras were made they were thinking of paintings, which were almost always made on rectangular canvasses.

And I suppose most canvases are rectangular because it's easy to make a rectangular wooden frame.

So, picutes and tvs are rectangular because it's a lot easier to make a rectangular wooden frame than a round one.

It is a lot easier to grind a round lens to correct shape than a rectangular one.

Lenses are ground to focus light into a specific image. Couple that with the rectangular apeture plate in a movie projector and viola! rectangular picture.

because you would lose 20% of the image if you eliminate the corners of the rectangular screen, and its easier to make rectangular film rolls

i NEVER thought of that. how weird. good question but I don't know the answer. sorry. i think it's cool that other ppl can answer this one.
