Any advice for shooting Superbikes in motion with a standard Sony DSC-F828 digital camera?

Unfortunatly I don't have any zoom lenses just the standard camera lens.

You don't have any zoom lenses? Are you sure you're talking about the F828? It IS a zoom. (7x 28-200 if I'm not mistaken)

I don't know how far from the action you are going to be, but ideally, you'd want enough reach to fill a nice portion of the frame with a bike. Not sure how much 200mm is going to get you.

You can take two approaches to the getting the photos :

If you want the bikes to look frozen in time, select a high shutter speed. (I'd say anything from 1/500 and up) And fire away. At this speed it's hard to get a blurry photo.

Or, if you want to capture some of the motion and blur the background, select a slower speed like 1/60 or 1/100. The trick at this speed is to pan with the bike (keeping it in the frame) so it stays in focus. If you get it right, the resulting photo will have a nice blurred background and a sharp bike. (Or at least some portion of the bike will be in focus.)

Pan shots are far more difficult, but look very nice when you get them right.

And remember, it's digital, so don't worry if you take 50 bad pan shots before you get one that's sharp, just keep shooting.

you can select sport mode - i have the same camera and it speeds up shutter speed so you dont get any blurring. you really do need a bigger lens though

get one on ebay for less than the shop price then sell it on ebay for the same once you're done with it!

you can change the film speed. ths will give you stop action pictures.

Track with the bikes for action shots, pre-focus and be quick on the trigger with a wide depth of field (if possible). That's what I would try anyway!
