I have the 18-55 mm now. I'm looking to buy another camera lens to go with the Nikon D40.
I take pictures of landscape, portraits, reflections. I am looking for a broad use lens.
What do you reccomend for a second lens?
Ps. This is my first dslr and I'm a beginner photographer without much experience.
I appreciate any answers! The natural companion to your 18-55 lens is the 55-200 lens. In fact, Nikon just introduced a 55-200 with VR for only $250. I bought this lens for my wife and it's a very nice lens. Popular Photography reviewed it in the June issue and it will surely sell out after that review. The issue is not available on-line yet and I don't even think it's on the news stands, so you might be able to buy the lens for the next week or two, but I predict that it WILL sell out. The title of the review is "Steal This Lens" and then they go on to praise the bang-for-the-buck value of the lens.
I have the 18-200 VR lens that KoKo suggested and it's a very nice lens, but it is basically unavailable. You can put your name on a list to be notified when someone gets one in, but they don't seem to be getting them. It's not cheap either, if you can find one.
This little tutorial will give you an idea what to expect from the various focal lengths, in case you are not aware. This is NOT a lens test or a camera test! It is merely intended to show the difference between various focal lengths. The camera was a Nikon D200 and the lens was the Nikon 18-200 VR lens. There is further explanation on the image itself. It would help if you click on "All Sizes" above the image.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/7189769@N04... IF you can get your hands on the 18-200mm from Nikon, then that should be your all around lens since your just a beginner photographer. Not saying its a noobies lens but it is very versitle and decent IQ. Dont know how much your willing to spend so thats my opinion. Two great answers from Koko and Dr. Sam, above.
The Nikon 18-200mm is a marvelous lens - but expensive and very difficult to find in a store because it is so popular.
The Nikon 55-200mm is much less expensive and a pefect mate to your 18-55 if you can accomodate 2 lenses. For most photography subjects, you will use one lens or the other and only need to change lenses when you change subjects.

Disclosure: I am the owner of www.lenslenders.com lens rentals in Canada. Nikon's 12-24. The trend in photography is wiiiide and this baby will get you great results.
If the Nikon busts your budget, go for a third party lens but make absolutely sure it's compatible with your camera (needs an in-lens motor).
Hope this helps. |
