What lens should i get with my slr camera?

the lens to get depends on what you are taking pictures of and how you are taking pictures and what you want them to look like. If you want a basic good starter look for a zoom 85-125 or so

what brand and what are you mainly going to shoot? I use a 28-135mm lens as my walk-around lens.

For a less than full frame digital, you will need something wider than 85-105. Would help to know what kind of camera you have and how much money you want to spend.

The usual recommendation for film users is the standard 50mm 1.8 lens. For most digital cameras, this would be rather long for a walk-a-round lens, but would make a nice portrait lens.

For digital, many people use something in the 18 - 55 neighborhood.

Spitfin advises buying an 85 - 135 zoom lens as the basic lens. This is very bad advice.

What is considered a standard lens for an SLR is about 55mm. It has reasonable field of view - not wide nor telephoto. Starting at 85 mm will be very difficult to use for photographing close subjects, within a building, etc. Also, if you are using a digital SLR, many cameras use a small sensor which has the effect of multiplying the lens focal length by a factor of about 1.6. So to cover the "normal ~ 55 mm range" you actually need a lens with a focal length of about 34 mm.

I would follow the recommendations the kegdawg and Ara 57. A short focal length zoom is where you want to start.
