Can I put the lens from my Sigma SA7 (film camera) on my Digital EOS 350D? |
or is there a difference between Digital and film lenses? In short: No. No, and there is no major difference between digital and film lenses. Most lenses used on film cameras can also be used on digital cameras. Lenses that are optimized for digital cameras have specially coated glass elements called low dispertion glass that minimize optical aberrations caused by light of differing wavelengths striking the image sensor, a problem inherent in digital cameras. These aberrations are not present in film cameras, but these low dispertion coatings can also serve to improve image quality on film cameras as well. Another type of lens made specifically for digital cameras have a smaller diameter rear lens barrel to furthur eliminate the chance for unwanted light to strike the image sensor. These lenses cannot be used on a film camera due to this smaller diameter rear lens barrel because it will crop the film frame causing a barrel distortion or vignette at wider focal lenths. But lenses used on film can be mated to any digital camera given the mount. Your problem is not with the type of lens, but with the lens mount. I'm not positive, but your sigma SA7 mount may not be the same as a canon EF mount, and that would be why you wouldn't be able to use a lens with a sigma body mount on a canon body mount. If the mount of your lens from the sigma SA7 is a canon EF mount, it will be compatible. sigma site calls them EF mounts like canon, but does out not and out say you can use on canon, canon mount is called EF so whats that all about |
