Dose the nikon d80 camera body have a built in lens motor?Yes it does. The crank shaft gear can be seen at the 7:00 position on the cameras lens mount.
Which means all AF lenses designed for Nikon AF (Tamron, Sigma, Tokina, etc) will operate just fine. Yup. Go Clavestone! yes it does hav a built in lens motor unlike the nikon D40/40x it does have one Yes it does - but why are you asking?
Do you own Nikon AF lenses that require it?
Are you planning to take advantage of the used Nikon lens market and need a camera compatible with Nikon AF lenses?
Is there a lens in the Nikon catalogue that you are planning to buy with the D80 that requires it?
I suspect that you are comparing the Nikon D40 and D80. The D40 is only autofocus compatible with AF-S hypersonic focus lenses. (You can manually focus with all other lenses.) However, AF-S is undoubtedly the direction Nikon is going to to go with future lenses and their current selection covers most photographers needs.
AF-S lenses are faster to focus, more accurate to focus, quieter and require less battery power. Even with a D80, your preference would be to own AF-S lenses anyway.
