Digital Camera Optical Zoom help?

So i am looking for a slim digital camera with 5x+ optical zoom. I have found several options but i have one question. Is there a difference in optical zoom quality for cameras that have the expanding lens and the lens that stays inside the camera? for ex:
folding out lens:http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stor...
and internal:http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stor...

thanks

As long as you compare optical zoom to optical 9and not digital) the comparison is fair. Whether or not the lens comes out of the camera matters little. A lens with a larger aperture (smaller f/stop) lets more light through than one with a smaller aperture. A larger CCD or CMOS optical sensor will result in much better pictures and better low-light sensitivity than a compact camera with a very small CCD element.

A Nikon D3 D-SLR costs about $4K and it is a fantastic camera (lens extra). But it is big and complex to use, so you will not take it with you often. A smaller camera that you have with you when you take your winning shot would win over the D3 left home.

Think carefully about how much effort you want to put in taking ictures, how much gear you want to lug along, and how much to spend.

There simply is no best camera for everyone. Sony makes good cameras, though.

For consumer level cameras, it pays to look at tests conducted by Consumer Reports. Popular Photography has useful reviews too. These two magazines put a lot of effort into objective testing, something that is beyond an individual's capability.
