Why is it that telephoto lenses for digital cameras are more expensive than standard ones?

even if they both go up to the same zoom? why is one more expensive than the other?

They are not ... really. If the zoom range on a full frame lens is say 80-200 mm, then it is the same lens you use on any digital SLR of the same brand. Same lens, same price.

Many of the newer lenses (and lenses designed for APS-C sensors found on most digital SLR's) include other features that increase their costs ... like VR or IS as well as internal silent motors for auto-focusing the lens These features add to the cost of the lens, not whether they cover a full frame sensor or a APS-C

Except for the high end digital cameras, removable lenses are relatively new and require many hours of research and development. This can be very expensive until the R & D is paid for. Conversly, Analog cameras have been around for decades, the technology is older and sales are down because most everyone uses digital cameras today. Given time, the competition and market forces will bring the digital lenses within reach of the average consumer..

Check the min f stop some have variable apertures which change as the focal length does. More expensive telephotos are prime or fixed focal length that have a fixed aperture.
