its a choice between two:
sony dsc-w55
or
canon powershot a560 Go with the Canon. Sony uses proprietary memory storage called Memory Stick that is incompatible with other camera brands. If you decide to upgrade your camera in a few years, you'll be stuck buying another Sony if you want to keep your memory card, and that's a hassle. Plus, many photo printing kiosks will not accept MS if you decide to get prints, and that's a hassle as well.
Canon makes a great camera, and they currently have top marketshare in the industry. Sony basically produces "me too" technology right now -- stuff they've lifted from other innovators.
I am a trainer for Best Buy, so I'm not invested in any one brand. I just want to make sure people get something they're happy with, and I hear more complaints from Sony buyers than any other brand. canon better pixels THE GOOD ONE Sony...... sony dsc-w55 it's a better model Consumer guide rates most canon cameras as best buys. I had a powershot i took to europe and carried in my pocket and it was great. can freeze a hummiongbirds wings on fast speed and do a macro shot of flowers really close. AA batteries a plus. get rechargeables. I love mine. dont know about the sony. I have a cannon powershot A570 is and love it.

Things I looked for was AA batteries, SD Memory Card and a optical zoom.
Takes two AA batteries which I have taken over 160 pic on a single charge. I use rechargeable batteries, but carry a set of standard alcaline for back up. The AA battery is a real plus.
I use a 1 Gig SD card which I have never filled up, After a day of shooting I dump to my laptop. Will hold over 160 pics at highest resolution.
Great Pics. how about the one the new england cheaters used. sony The Canon PS A560.
BUT consider the Canon PS A630 or A640. http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/canon/...
Almost like the A560, but check out the vari-angle display screen. Protects the screen and can take shots at various angles. Even of yourself with the screen adjusted towards you.
I have an older model of this camera. The Canon PowerShot A620. And I love it! I've found Cannon to be a very trustworthy brand. It depends on your preferences, though. Make sure to check out customer reviews on Amazon. Canon.
Or, if you're still in doubt, just go to a dedicated camera store and ask around. Touch the camera with your hand, take a shoot or two. Chances are you'll like one better than the other. Sony DSC-W55 is the nicer camera. get the canon
All of the major brands are good. Choose a brand that appeals to you. Then you have to think about getting a spare battery, what size memory card, if you want an extended warranty, how much you can afford, what size zoom, if you want manual controls, the size of the camera, finding a reliable place to purchase it, and the list goes on and on and on.......
The first thing to realize is that almost any digital camera will take good pictures. If more people would read the manual more than once, they would be able to take better pictures. Usually, the person assumes it is the camera when it could be them not knowing exactly what to do. Just give yourself more photographic knowledge by doing more reading on the internet.
I really believe buying a camera is an individual choice.
The person needs to read alot of reviews on cameras so they can decide on the features that they really want and need.
Go to the store and hold them so you can see if they feel comfortable in your hands. If possible, take some pictures in the store to check the quality of the pictures.
I can only give a suggestion of what to look for in a new digital camera.
Good Luck
