Thing 2 consider when buying digital camera?.........What is a good digital camera for around $500?

I have used a 35mm Canon A-1 for 25yrs. I want to switch to a digital camera. I will use it for family photos and vacations.

The sony H5 camera is a awesome entry level camera

I personally like canon , they make great cameras, and put allot of effort in to them. stay away from brands you dont know. even some you do. i would stick to canon. oh i used to sell digital cameras.

You can get a ton of great cameras for under $500.
Canon has several choice
Under $300 - SD-Series 630 or 600
~$400 - SD800IS, S3IS (closest to an SLR under $500)
~$500 - SD900

You can probably get a Canon 300D for under $500. Too bad your A1 uses FD lenses. All of the new Canon DSLRs use EF or EF-s lenses.

I'd go with the 800IS, image stabilization + digic III processor. good value. or either of the SD600 or SD630.
