I want to buy Canon Digital Rebel XTi, and I would like firsthand experiences on whether it is high quality?

I am 14 and technically I am an amateur photographer. Recently someone let me see their camera, and after told me what it was, the Canon Digital Rebel XTi. I really like it, and, though I love my current camera, I think point-and-click might not suit me anymore. I was wondering first: whether this is suitable for my age鈥擨 would probably have my parents chip in a bit, and second: I鈥檇 like some firsthand experiences on whether it's good? Thanks so much!

Um, to be honest, I see no benefit other than the larger screen of the XTi over the XT, the pixel increase does very little (well, the increase in quality exists, but it's not often you'll need that extra.) I have no hands-on experience with either cameras so I may not comment any further.
And about your age, it's good to start it young (among other things) so that you get more experience. As for me, I got my first DSLR at 14 (half a year ago). To tell you about my personal experience, I found it to be quite rewarding to finally get more control instead of point and shoot, and even more rewarding to bring back the photos. Another thing is that, you recognize that you're not stupid, and you're able to take a photo without the camera telling you what to do (albeit I rely heavily on my camera's metering). So yeah, it is rewarding to me.
About how someone let you see their camera, I have to say first, that equippment is not as relevant to photography as one may think (cameras only assist you in taking the good picture). And secondly, just because you first came across a Canon, doesn't mean it's the only good brand. Canon is a good brand, and actually, the only other brand I recommend is Nikon. I'd recommend that you carefully research the strengths of each brand before you buy into one of them. (There's also Pentax, Fujiflim, or Olympus, if you're interested)
My biggest point is that if you want to get serious about photography in the future, now is a good (if not best) time to start in order to get the most experience possible.

Hi Faith, The Digital Rebel XTi is a very good camera - especially for a beginner. I owned the original XT some time ago before I upgraded to the 5D. The XTi is much better than my XT was as far as resolution and other 'goodies'.

As for suitable for your age...that's probably a question only you can answer. Most people purchase an an SLR because they wan't more control over how they photograph. Once you learn the basics of photography - aperature, shutter, exposure, ISO, etc., and how it affects the way your photographs look, almost any camera will produce excellent results.

Get yourself a good book and practice, practice, practice.

Good luck, and have fun.

KoKo, where ARE you???
