digital camera GUIDE
be sure to check titles on the left side
the guide should answer your questions Every time you turn around, new cameras are coming out. Don't hold your breath waiting for the perfect camera or you will never buy anything!
One of the most advanced ultra compacts is the Canon SD850-IS. It is so new that you might not even be able to find it yet. It is an updated version of the SD700-IS, so it's not like buying a pig in a poke. it should be an excellent camera. I have not seen any reviews yet, but I'd buy it myself on the strength of the SD700's reputation alone.
http://www.dpreview.com/news/0705/070507... Actually, right now, compact cameras are at a level of quality that previous compacts were unable to match. Not to say that today's compacts are a giant leap forward, but they have slowly reached this stage. I don't think there's any brand that really took a step backwards.
It's worth mentioning that it'll be hard to transition back to using a compact after getting used to using a DSLR.
Personally, I like the Sony. But since I've never owned a Sony before, I can't say for sure, but I seem to get a good impression on their ultra compacts from reviews. I don't like using Canon compacts, because of their less than well thought out user interface including buttons, and menu system, not that they're horrible. It's becoming cliche, but I love Nikon's menu systems, and it's especially improved with the scroll wheel on the S50. Even though I personally own this ultra compact camera, I would still like to highly recommend the purchase of a Nikon Coolpix L10 for the following reasons:
1. Besides taking well-exposed hi-quality 5 megapixel pictures, it uses a standard set of rechargeable double AA batteries which last a very long time;
2. Has a 3x optical zoom;
3. The flash setting for "red-eye" correction is on the navigator wheel and not within a submenu;
4. It's very small and light;
5. Uses inexpensive SD memory cards;
6. The digital video feature takes wonderful "sound" videos which are noise free. It records the piano very well with it's built-in microphone;
7. It comes with a USB 2.0 transfer cable which you connect to your USB computer port;
8. Has tripod mount on bottom of camera;
9. And the price is a mere $120 [sold at Samy's Camera - www.samys.com, and Staples.com.]
Good luck! |
