I going to start to sell children clothe on the Internet. So I need alot of sample picture use on the web page and for advertising in the brochures. I have CANON digital camera S3IS and SLR EOS 400D. Could you help me what do i need to set up to have a bright and clear pictures ? Thank you very much. For the camera:
- a good tripod
- any lens with focal length greater than 50mm
For lighting:
- a single or double flash unit setup (single should be fine since clothing is relatively 2-dimensional), but outfit the flash with a softbox. Diffusion is important to avoid 'hotspots' on your clothing.
For backdrop material:
- Any material that does not reflect your flash glare. BH Photo, Adorama, or your local camera store should have some options. If on a budget, find a white or neutral-colored wall with flat paint.
For your setup, make sure you are not casting a shadow onto the backdrop...a (secondary) backlight is often used to remove these type of shadows.

(I would favor a softbox over an umbrella, but that is just my preference.) Take a look at other brochures and see how the light is being used.
Usually the shots are taken against a white background (to make sure it is white in the photography, the photographer usually lights it about three to five stops hotter than the exposure of the subject.
Use two 500 watt lamps with umbrellas (to diffuse the lighting) and provide the model and clothing even lighting.
Forget about using the S31S and use the 400D. Use a lens setting of about 60mm on your zoom lens (that will give you the equivalent of a portrait lens)
You might be money ahead to hire a photographer to help you set up your "studio" and give you some lessons on how to shoot your products. If you don't want to spend a lot of money on special lights, I find that sunlight or indirect sunlight (sunny room of your house) is the best with digital photography. I don't like to use the flash because it seems to flatten and overly brighten the image. Plus, it would be great to have your clothing in action, on some little models, in a beautiful sunlit area! |
