If I go for a digital still camera, which brand'll be the best, Sony or Canon or what?

Write a short list of the things that are important to you, then go shopping and get some hands on with the cameras that have those features. I picked a Sony that takes AA batteries, that way when I'm on the road taking pictures and the batteries die, I can replace them very easily. A lot of cameras take proprietary batteries - they are expensive and you cant buy them everywhere you can AA's. Also think about size - will it fit in your pocket, do you need a big bag to carry it, and so on........
One of the most important things about getting that "hands on" is you will see the LAG TIME of each of the cameras. Some take longer than others to actually take the photo - from the time you hit the button until it actually takes the picture. If you have kids, or dogs, or cats you know they don't always stop and wait for you to take the picture. Most times you only have a second or so to take that "great" photo. Most digital cameras will take so long that you miss the best shot.

I bought a Sony lately and I find it very good but both brands are good.
I head JVC are also good

The thing to do is to sit down and compare all the specs, and see what you need, and get something closest to meeting your specs. All the name brands are about the same.

CANON REBEL, you cant go wrong with it

leica makes the best cameras ever made and you can get some of them for less than other brands

canon is noisier compared to sony ( the prosumers n dslr). and i bought a sony H2 last month and i am very happy with it.

Hi,
I shop a lot and I always use cheapest prices search engine for all they offer. Almost every regular store and online merchants is listed there, lots of consumer reviews and a lot of other ways to save time and money.
I hope I helped you and good luck to you.

Lisa

p.s. check out the consumer written reviews, they should really help you!

if your looking at <$1,000 DSLR's then Pentax K10D is the best.

here is proof.

Which is better? Chevy or Ford? Porsche or BMW? Mercedes or Lexus? Nikon or Canon? These are all unanswerable questions as they are all "the best" in their class, depending who you ask.

If you have no personal preference, perhaps you would do best by going with the recommendation of your local camera shop pro or a friend who has something that he/she likes. If you have someone who is willing to help you learn how to use a particular camera, add ten points to that brand in your decision making process.

My leaning is to say that Canon is the better choice for small cameras (point and shoots) and Nikon is the better choice for DSLR's, but that's jus my personal preference. If you can post another question... Tell us how much you want to spend, what you plan to use the camera for most of the time, and what your prior experience is with photography. With this information, we will be much more helpful to you.
